Fragrances in general have a very wide range of volatilities, which are responsible for the duration of a scent. Essences are classified by the order in which they release their fragrance, called notes, which occurs in three steps. The term “Notes” in perfumery essentially refers to ingredients that make up the fragrance. (Herman, 2016) Firstly, the head notes or top notes are released. These are usually the essences whose scent molecules weigh the least and have a higher volatility. (Science Buddies, 2020) The head notes are the first impression of the perfume which are perceived immediately and usually only last around twenty minutes after the scent is applied. Next come the heart notes also known as the middle notes, which form the character of the perfume. These usually last around three to four hours and are somewhere between the top notes and the base notes, as the name suggests. Lastly, the base notes or end notes, the most persistent of all the classifications, are released. These form the foundation of the perfume and have a lower volatility, which can last up to an entire day. (Science Buddies, 2020).
