Perfumery and Noses (Science of Perfumery Part 1)

Hello Readers! Today I'll be stating a blog post series, where I write about the science of perfumery. This series will consist of short blog posts that each explain one concept in the science of perfumery. Hope you enjoy and here's to part 1!

“Perfumery is the act of combining different olfactory ingredients, naturally occurring oils and chemical molecules, into a harmonious aromatic whole—a perfume.” Although perfume can be considered an art form, it is much more than that, as it also incorporates chemistry, biology and components of psychology. The complicated work of creating a fragrance is a job for the “Nose”, an expert with the knowledge of scent pairings, their volatilities and the scent longevity. (Vasiliauskaite & Evans, n.d.) This education is acquired over more than ten years of training and trials and usually also incorporates a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, due to the heavy science-based aspect of perfumery.
